Tesla Discontinuing Its Most Affordable Model, Get My Auto Reports

Tesla has announced that it will no longer be producing its lower-cost Model S 60 or the related Model S 60D.

Those who have had their hearts set on purchasing an affordable Tesla model may be in for a slight disappointment. Though Tesla introduced the relatively low-cost Model S 60 last year, the vehicle has already been discontinued, with Tesla shifting focus to the production of its much-hyped, upcoming Model 3. In a new statement to the press, Get My Auto comments on the significance of this announcement.

“It may seem at first like a sudden decision, discontinuing a model that was just introduced last year,” Get My Auto explains. “With that said, the Model 60 was always a bit of an odd fit within the Tesla lineup.”

Tesla, meanwhile, has explained its decision in a press statement of their own. “One year ago, we introduced the Model S 60 kWh battery as a more affordable option to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles,” Tesla explains. “However, most customers ended up buying an equivalent to the Model S 75 kWh. To simplify the ordering process for our customers, we will be removing the 60 kWh option from our lineup.”

The statement continues: “Customers who still want the opportunity to own a 60 kWh Model S will have until April 16, 2017 to place their order. Any 60 kWh Model S will have the ability to upgrade their battery to 75 kWh via an over the air update.”

According to Get My Auto, though, the elephant in the room here is the Model 3. “There is likely a worry that the low-cost Model 60 might cannibalize sales from the Model 3, which is a huge push for Tesla right now. This high-volume vehicle starts production soon, and will immediately become the flagship car in the Tesla fleet. The decision to kill the Model 60 may have more to do with shifting attention to the Model 3 than it does anything else.”

Regardless, those who want to order a Tesla Model 60 or a Model 60D are encouraged to do so sooner rather than later.
